Mastering Proportion: Dressing Any Build with Confidence
How to use proportion, colour and fit to flatter any body type. Practical tailoring advice from Mr. Lincoln.

Mastering Proportion: How the Right Suit Flatters Any Build
True elegance has little to do with having the perfect body. It comes from understanding proportion — dressing in a way that works with your natural frame rather than against it.
At Mr. Lincoln we tailor for every silhouette: tall and athletic builds as well as broader and more powerful frames. In each case the goal is the same — visual balance, all-day comfort and quiet authority.
The most effective approach is surprisingly simple. Rather than trying to hide parts of your body, the intelligent way is to enhance what is already there. Darker solid colours remain the most reliable foundation. Deep navy, charcoal grey and midnight black create a strong vertical line that lengthens the silhouette. Our wool-elastane fabrics drape cleanly without clinging, offering both ease of movement and reliable shape retention.
Fit is decisive. Shoulders must sit naturally on the frame. The jacket should close with just enough room to breathe. Trousers should follow the thigh without tension. For broader builds we often recommend a single-breasted jacket with a slightly higher button stance, which lifts the eye toward the chest and shoulders. Subtle vertical textures such as fine pinstripes or faint herringbone are preferable, while wide horizontal stripes and loud checks are best avoided.
A spread or semi-spread collar helps balance a stronger neck and face. Trousers finished with a light break or none at all keep the leg line clean. Small, considered accessories — a tie of moderate width and a simple pocket square — prevent the upper body from appearing crowded.
No body type is inherently difficult. Only off-the-rack compromises are. When a suit is cut with care for your individual proportions, the difference is immediate and natural. You look like yourself — only better dressed.
Proportion is not about rigid rules, but about developing an informed eye for what truly suits your own frame. Once that understanding is in place, choosing and wearing a suit becomes considerably more confident and effortless.
